Running a hotel or aparthotel in The Hague

If you run a hotel or aparthotel in The Hague (Den Haag), two things shape your paperwork: tourist tax, which is charged per person, and the city's strict rules on short stays. Here's what applies in 2026, with the city's published hotel figures. Every number links to where it comes from.

At a glance

  • Tourist tax in 2026 is €6.20 per person per night (€2.85 at campsites and marinas).
  • It applies to guests aged 13 or over who do not live in The Hague, business stays included.
  • Commercial providers file a tax return every quarter.
  • Short stays are allowed only in buildings zoned and used for lodging.

Tourist tax (toeristenbelasting)

  • The rate

€6.20 per person per night for hotels, holiday rentals, B&Bs and other accommodation, and €2.85 at campsites and marinas. It is a fixed amount, not a percentage of the price, and is unchanged from 2025.

  • Who it applies to

Guests aged 13 or over who do not live in The Hague, including people staying for work.

  • Who pays

The accommodation provider, which registers with the municipality first.

  • How often

Commercial providers file a return every quarter and pay when they file; holiday-rental hosts file once a year.

Rules for short stays

For planning, The Hague distinguishes homes from lodging, meaning stays of less than four months. Short stays are allowed only in buildings zoned and used for lodging, where the last use was not residential. Turning a home into short-stay accommodation needs a permit to withdraw it from the housing stock, which the municipality says it usually refuses.

Residents who rent out their own home to tourists need a permit and a registration number shown in every advert, and may do so for at most 30 nights a year.
